In rural Nepal, communities often lack access to basic waste management services, leaving waste to be burned, buried or discarded in the environment. The Rigaun Community Recycling Centre (CRC) was established to provide a practical, community-based solution bringing waste collection, segregation and recycling closer to households while promoting the principles of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Located in Rigaun, Ganga Jamuna Rural Municipality, Dhading, the CRC began operations in November 2022, providing waste collection services to 115 households across Rigaun and Gumba. Households were provided with bins for dry waste, which was collected by trained local operators, transported to the CRC and segregated for recycling.
The project combines local waste collection with community awareness and data-driven management, creating a model that can be adapted by other rural communities.
By diverting recyclable materials from disposal, the CRC generated measurable environmental benefits.
