Because Kathmandu’s waste problem cannot be ignored anymore.
Kathmandu produces 1200 tons of waste every day.
Over 60% is either burned or dumped in the landfill. On average, this is 250 trucks of waste being taken to the landfill every single day.
Recently, Doko conducted a waste characterization study at the Banchare Danda Landfill site and this is how our landfill waste looks like: Organic (60%), Textile (30%), Plastic (5%), Sanitary (3%), E-waste (1%), Others (1%)
Kathmandu’s waste crisis pollutes the air, poisons water resources and drives climate change. When unsegregated organic matter is buried, it decomposes to release methane, a greenhouse gas more powerful at trapping heat than carbon dioxide. Open burning of the trash pollutes the air and causes respiratory illnesses, while toxic landfill leachate contaminates water supplies and spreads waterborne diseases.
The current waste system drains the economy too: valuable, recyclable resources are just buried- killing recycling and potential green job opportunities.
There’s more. Modern consumption introduces new, more dangerous pollutants: hazardous chemicals, heavy metals from e-waste and microplastics entering our food, water and bodies.
The current waste issue in Nepal calls for comprehensive, localized and long-term solutions to manage Kathmandu’s waste- this is where Doko comes in.

We work on all policy levels- strengthening national guidelines while empowering local municipalities to turn waste policy into action. We are currently developing a national Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Toolkit to tackle plastic waste.

Our projects are custom-designed for specific local landscapes and specialized waste streams, including plastics, e-waste and other dry recyclables. For example, in the Everest region, we are partnering to pilot a Deposit Return Scheme for plastic waste.
